A Little Music With Exercise Boosts Brain Power, Study Suggests (Mind Booster)

Mind Booster

It's no secret that exercise improves mood, but new research suggests that working out to music may give exercisers a cognitive boost. Listening to music while exercising helped to increase scores on a verbal fluency test among cardiac rehabilitation patients.

"This is the first study to look at the combined effects of music and short-term exercise on mental performance," said Charles Emery, the study's lead author and a professor of psychology at Ohio State University.

"Evidence suggests that exercise improves the cognitive performance of people with coronary artery disease," Emery said. "And listening to music is thought to enhance brain power. We wanted to put the two results together."

Those results appear in a recent issue of the journal Heart & Lung.

The study included 33 men and women in the final weeks of a cardiac rehabilitation program. Most participants had undergone bypass surgery, angioplasty or cardiac catheterization.

Coronary artery disease may compromise cognitive ability, Emery said; that's why he and his colleagues chose cardiac rehabilitation patients for this study.

Continue reading...The researchers asked participants to complete a verbal fluency test before and after two separate sessions of exercising on a treadmill. The workouts were scheduled a week apart and lasted about 30 minutes. Participants listened to classical music – Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" – during one of the sessions.

"We used 'The Four Seasons' because of its moderate tempo and positive effects on medical patients in previous research," Emery said. "But given the range of music preferences among patients, it's especially important to evaluate the influence of other types of music on cognitive outcomes."

As a way to measure anxiety and depression, participants completed a 30-item checklist before and after exercise. The list included adjectives to describe the patient's current mood. The researchers also tested each person's verbal fluency before and after each exercise session by asking participants to generate lists of words in specific categories.

"This kind of task challenges the part of the brain that handles planning and abstract thought as well as a person's capacity for organized verbal processing," Emery said.

Participants reported feeling better emotionally and mentally after working out regardless of whether or not they listened to music. But the improvement in verbal fluency test performance after listening to music was more than double that of the non-music condition.

"Exercise seems to cause positive changes in the nervous system, and these changes may have a direct effect on cognitive ability," Emery said. "Listening to music may influence cognitive function through different pathways in the brain. The combination of music and exercise may stimulate and increase cognitive arousal while helping to organize cognitive output."

Emery conducted the study with Evana Hsiao and Scott Hill, both with Ohio State, and David Frid of Pfizer, Inc.

A grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute helped fund this research.

A Simple and Effective Mind Power Technique (Mind Booster)

Mind Booster

This is the technique you can apply to boost your visualization power. I found this technique here.

Here is a simple technique to develop your visualization skills...

1. First relax yourself. The more relaxed you are, the more control you will have over your thoughts.

2. Use the 3-Finger technique. Let the tips of your thumb, index and middle finger touch each other. It should be done on both your hands. This has been known to help your mind focus.

3. Take something simple – an outline of a triangle or square maybe, and make a firm resolve to focus only on this for the next 5 minutes or so.

4. Now while you are visualizing, you will notice that your mind keeps wavering about. Do not fight it, because that is counter-productive. Just accept it, and move back to the image you had chosen to visualize.

Regular practice of the above exercise will surely improve your visualization skills tremendously. So there you have it! A simple and effective mind power technique you can start using immediately.

Mind Booster

By Karim Hajee
CreatingPower.com

You've probably heard that old saying - "If you put your mind to something you can achieve it." The only problem is that no one really ever taught you how to do this.

Yes you can achieve anything if you instruct your mind and subconscious mind properly.

Unfortunately most people don't know how to instruct their mind or subconscious mind.

Instead, they end up getting their mind and subconscious to create things they really don't want.

If you don't get your mind and subconscious mind to focus on what you want - you'll likely end up getting what you don't want.

How can you stop creating what you don't want and get your mind and subconscious mind to actually work for you?

I'm about to show you how - so read on and enjoy!

Six-Minute Nap May Boost Memory (Mind Booster)

Mind Booster

Even the shortest of catnaps may be enough to improve performance in memory tests, say German scientists.

Just six minutes "shut-eye" for volunteers was followed by significantly better recall of words, New Scientist magazine reported.

"Ultra-short" sleep could launch memory processing in the brain, they suggested.

One UK researcher disagreed, saying that longer sleep was needed to have an impact on memory.

Dozens of studies have probed the relationship between sleep and memory, with clear evidence that body's natural sleep-wake cycle plays an important role.

The team from the University of Dusseldorf wanted to see just how short a sleep could have any discernable impact.

They used a group of students who were asked to remember a set of words, then given an hour's break before testing.

During that hour, some of the students were allowed to sleep for approximately six minutes, while the rest were kept asleep.

Remarkably, on waking, the napping students performed better in the memory test.

Some theories suggests that the processing of memories takes place in deep sleep, a phase which does not normally start until at least 20 minutes after falling asleep.

However, the team, led by Dr Olaf Lahl, said that it was possible that the moment of falling asleep triggered a process in the brain that continued regardless of how long the person actually stayed awake.

"To our knowledge, this demonstrates for the first time that an ultra-brief sleep episode provides an effective memory enhancement," he wrote.

Professor Jim Horne, from the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University, said that while the study was "interesting", he was yet to be convinced that the effect was purely one of memory enhancement.

"The idea that memory could be enhanced in just six minutes is a quite unique finding and one has to be rather cautious about it.

"There is quite a bit of evidence that memory processing probably takes place more than six minutes into sleep."

14 Scientifically-Proven Ways to Boost Brain Power (Mind Booster)

Until just a few years ago, doctors believed that the brain stopped making new neural connections - meaning that the memory began to get irreversibly worse - when the body stopped developing, usually in the early 20s. And doctors knew that, like any other part of the body, neurons weaken as people age. Loss of brain function due to neural breakdown was assumed to be a normal, unavoidable part of aging. It turns out they were wrong.

In the past few years, it has become clear that you can, in fact, make new neurons starting in your 20s and continuing well into old age. You can literally rewire the brain with new parts as the older parts wear out. How?

There are lots of things you can do right now to preserve, protect and enhance your gray matter.

Learn to Think at Light Speed (Mind Booster)

Fluid Thinking is Better than Cubes

The Language of Feeling is a method of thinking that uses a wider array of information for processing thoughts and ideas. It is a language because to use it you must learn a new way to identify and relate to things.

Everything in the universe has its own unique feeling or frequency. It is similar to how we use names to identify things, only it is based on feeling.

Frequency is superior to using words because it carries more information. A basic way to describe this is to compare how a painting feels versus its name; there's just much more content in the feeling, right? Ok, well that's really an oversimplification. The frequency is more like using the DNA code to identify a person instead of their name.

Another reason Language of Feeling is a better way to think is that it can be used in a 'Non-thought' environment, or when your mind is quiet, something that you can't do thinking with words.

When you're mind is quiet you can now pay attention to all of your senses at once, including what's around you, what your body is telling you - basically all the benefits of a mind without chatter, which there are many.

In comparison, observe yourself or someone else the next time they engage intense thinking. You can see it is a heavy, engrossing process. Notice that they are oblivious to everything but the thought. Thinking doesn't have to be so heavy.

The Language of Feeling is a Broad and Powerful Way to Think

1. Identify things by their true, inherent value, not simply the human utility of a thing. If you
seek to think outside the box, stop thinking from the perspective of a human.

2. Using sensation-based thoughts silences mind-chatter and creates a Non-thought environment, bringing about all the benefits of Non-thought. These benefits are many, a few are having full awareness of your environment, your body, your thoughts and feelings.

3. Multiple layers of awareness become available. Energetic, Intent, Potential, Macro/Micro Awareness, Dimensional, for example. This is due in part to Non-thought; the clear, aware state used for the Language of Feeling.

4. The Language of Feeling allows you to exist more in a state of feel-based observation. This allows one to understand and appreciate the environment in a variety of very real ways. For example, to know what is uncomfortable and comfortable about a space, or how your behaviors are being affected by your environment.

5. The Language of Feeling will develop your Psychic Sense. You'll begin to notice that there exist layers of data embedded in each object. These layers are what a true psychic reads when doing a reading on a person or object.

To better explain these layers, when you begin the Language of Feeling practice you can feel the basics like texture and hardness. And as you go you may feel the inner makeup and the micro details. These feeling-based details are then interpreted by the visual center, so perhaps you can now see in your minds eye what you might see in a microscope.

Another layer may include details on what conditions the object may have originated, or who used it. In your mind's eye you might see the interior of the factory from which it was built. You're now entering the psychic arena. Your brain is interpreting the frequency of the object.
